Day 46: On the Banks of the River Lex by N.K. Jemison

It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

Wait, no.

OK, think American Gods only all the people are dead. And now the gods like to make cookies and drink coffee. Death (though I have to admit I am picturing Gaiman’s uber-emo Dream rather than Death) is moping about town now that the world has ended.

Unfortunately, the Nursery Rhymes who live in Brooklyn are about to get flooded out so Death goes to see what’s what. And they are dying. So Death decides to go to Coney Island. He finds an octopus filling its tank from the ocean, cup by cup.

Then Death learns to play the bagpipes.

Hooray for our new tentacled overlords!
